Jennifer Love Hewitt is taking on true crime.
The Can’t Hardly Wait actress is lending her voice to the new Investigation Discovery series A Killer Among Friends. Partially inspired by Hewitt’s I Know What You Did Last Summer films, the six-part true crime show will chronicle how shocking murders devastate different groups of young friends.
An official description for the series reads: “The six-part series will explore a group of interconnected individuals who are collectively haunted by a murder of one of their own, serving as the catalyst to unravel secrets, suspicions, and betrayals between friends. Amidst the hunt for a killer, no one is entirely certain who they can trust… or if another member of their friend group might be next.”
In the first trailer for the series, which Entertainment Weekly can exclusively debut above, the show’s stars remember their fallen friends.
“There’s just so much I wish I would have done if I only knew,” one woman says.
“If you can’t trust your friends, then who can you trust?” another woman asks.
The trailer also shows some of the series’ participants visiting the scene of the crime. “It’s so hard to think what was done to her here,” a different woman says while fighting tears.
Hewitt, who serves as narrator and executive producer, teases the series in menacing voiceover. “Six friend groups. Six terrifying stories of murder and betrayal,” she says in the trailer. “Sure, you can trust your friends. But I wouldn’t.”
The actress — who will return to play Julie James in the new I Know What You Did Last Summer later this year — reflected on the new ID series in a press release. “Identifying new pockets of storytelling in an innovative format has always been a passion of mine as an executive producer,” Hewitt said. “A Killer Among Friends offers a unique opportunity for me to draw from my own work as an actress, as we blend together a kaleidoscope of perspectives to tell each of these tragedies that deeply impact group dynamics and shatter beliefs.”
The season premiere episode, “Killer on Campus,” will unpack the grisly death of University of Kentucky football player Trent DiGiuro, who was killed while celebrating his 21st birthday in 1994.
Additional episodes of the series will revolve around the deaths of Wisconsin actress Jessie Blodgett, California teen Elyse Pahler, Connecticut middle schooler Maryann Measles, Cal State Fullerton alum Michele Carson, and UCLA student Ron Baker.
The premiere of A Killer Among Friends will air on ID on Monday, July 14 at 10 p.m. ET. Additional episodes will air on ID on Mondays at 10 p.m., and will be available to stream on HBO Max.
